Family history of varicose veins is the single most significant risk factor for causing varicose veins. Research suggests that almost half of the people suffering from varicose veins have a family history and children with both parents having varicose veins have a 90% chance of developing varicose veins in them.

Varicose veins is defined as a disorder in which blood vessels (veins) become twisted, swollen, and bulge on the skin surface. The veins usually appear blue, green, or purple in color. Varicose veins can occur in hands or feet but are more common in the body’s lower part, mainly legs, feet, or ankles.

If you or someone in your family has a history of varicose veins, this article will help you understand if family history increases the risk of varicose veins.

How Do Varicose Veins Occur, And What Are Their Causes?

Varicose veins occur due to improper functioning of the veins. Veins contain one-way valves, which help the blood flow in one direction. When these valves are damaged or not functioning properly (weak), the blood collects in the veins (pooling) instead of flowing towards the heart. Thus, resulting in enlargement and swelling of the veins.

The furthest veins from the heart are affected the most because gravity makes it harder for blood to flow back towards the heart.

Some of the risk factors that may be responsible for the development of varicose veins include:

  • Obesity
  • Menopause
  • Age
  • Standing for long periods
  • Family history of varicose veins

How To Prevent Varicose Veins If It Runs In Your Family?

If there is a history of varicose veins in your family, some of the below-mentioned steps may help you to reduce the risk of getting them:

  • Clothing: Some of the clothing options help prevent or reduce the symptoms of varicose veins. You must avoid tight clothing, mainly around the pelvis and waist. Consult a physician about wearing compression stockings. These help keep consistent pressure on the legs, decrease swelling and prevent blood pooling in the veins.
  • Walking: For most people, workdays consist of standing or sitting in one place for longer durations. Standing or sitting in one position for extended periods can affect blood circulation and worsen varicose veins. It would be best if you tried to take frequent breaks at work (take a walk every 30 minutes) so that it helps to keep your blood flowing. While in a sitting position do not cross your leg for a longer duration as it may worsen varicose veins. If you are standing for extended periods, take a break and sit down every 30 minutes. You must avoid wearing high heels for long periods as it increases the pressure on your legs and worsens the varicose veins.
  • Healthy lifestyle: Obesity is one of the major causes of varicose veins. Obesity is a risk factor for many serious diseases. Being overweight adds extra pressure on the veins, which worsens or speeds up the development of varicose veins. Healthy eating habits rich in fiber and low salt not only helps in weight reduction but also prevent other health complications. While exercising regularly improves leg strength, vein strength, and improves overall blood circulation, thus reducing the risk of varicose veins.
  • Regular screening: If you have a family history of varicose veins, it is crucial to regularly get screened for the disease. Early detection makes treatment more manageable and in a more efficient manner. Ultrasonography is a commonly used screening tool for varicose veins detection.
